I have begun assessing the library, using community nursing process and Ruth Freeman’s many tools for each of the five steps (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation). It is proving to be a good teaching aid for my community health class. Through observation, record review, focus groups, surveys, and interviews I am gathering information on many aspects of the library.

Yesterday, with the help of the library committee, I ran focus groups around the issues of book quality, book usage, physical space, and user’s needs with all the students. There is plenty of feedback to work with. Next I will compile and analyze this data.

I must back track. I have not mentioned Mamta’s vision for the library. The principal was awarded her master’s from Edinburgh, Scotland. The high quality of the library she studied at had a great impression on her. Since that time, I believe she has been nursing the idea of MIBE Graduate School for Nurses to house such as library. She sees electronic resources seamlessly integrated in with orderly rows of current books and academic journals. This library will be one which draws teachers from all 28 MIBE schools of nursing and other health care professionals to come for educational development. Her dream is ambitious and will take efforts of many, resources-of-plenty, and time.

I hope to provide recommendations in my report which are ambitious, with Mamta’s vision as the target. However, I intend to also provide realistic steps the school can take in the direction of this target. At present my head is floating in gallons of ideas. I hope they will translate to paper.

MISSION:

One of the tasks I have while here at MIBE School Indore is to assess the library, compose a report with recommendations for improvements to be presented to the Board of Directors, and begin implementing the plans which are approved by the board.

I have a particular attachment to the library, because of the books collected and sent from Victoria last year. At that time I thought the majority of books in the library were from the 1980s, maybe the 1970s. There certainly were very few books from the 1990s or later.

SITUATION ON THE GROUND:

Since arriving I have been using the library on a regular basis. As it turns out there are many books from the 1950s. The new books sent last year house their own shelves and are designated reference books only. This is for fear they will be stolen. There are four cupboards with these books and other books from the library that look new. The copyrights for the New Reference Books (as I refer to them) range between 1970 and 2010.

I have not been able to figure out an exact date the school last had a librarian. All I know for sure is it was over 10 years ago. The catalog system has not been kept up. The old books are cataloged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system (DDC). The newer books have account numbers which simply number the books in the order of which they entered the library. These account numbers are useless for keeping take of books, no good for returning the books to the correct location, and helps none with finding the books

The books with the DDC are not kept in order. I have deduced many reasons for this. The school has not been removing older books from the library’s shelves on a regular basis (or possibly ever). There are book shelves stacked with books two rows deep. There are full bookshelves kept in the librarian’s office and books stacked along the perimeter of the library, well out of reach, on the storage space about 8 feet up the wall on deep shelves. There are simply too many books. There are books in taters from use and abuse of some sort, which are kept on these shelves as well.

Another reason the books are not in order is the library committee, students and half the faculty members do not know how to use the DDC system. They do not know what a catalog system is. Over 200,000 libraries in the world use the DDC system. It is one of the widest used catalog system for libraries in the world. If the undergraduate and graduate students who walk through the halls of this school learnt how to use the DDC system they could walk into any (kept –up) library in the word and know how to find books. It baffles me that the acting principal has not been given the occasion to learn how to use a library.

I am trying to recall how old I was when I learnt how to use a library. I am certain it was in elementary school. What year did you learn?

Ms. Singh recommended we start re-shelving the books in order every Saturday morning with all the students for an hour. It is an argeous task to organize books with account numbers and when there is a lack of space. I suggested waiting until my report has been written and recommendations have been approved. (I believe the first thing approved will be an electronic catalog, which would require cataloging the useful books). Ms. Singh is a woman of action and does not mind if the students have to re-shelve them all over again later in the year. She wants the library usable now. I wonder how she lived with it over all these years without a librarian.

PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE:

During one of these Saturday sorting sessions, I took the following photos of the students hard at work. Sarita asked me to take a posed picture, instead of one of her back. I asked her to grab a book and show an older copyright date. The first book we plucked off one of the piles of books in front of her was dated 1977. “Ah. We can do better than that!” I exclaimed, thinking we could easily get a book from the 1960s or 1950s. The second book we picked up off the top of another pile of books next to Sarita, was dated 1927! I did not believe it. I was truly shocked. So here is the evidence.

The Ladies will be meeting on September 21, 2010 at 7:30 in the Ladies Parlour. “Becky” has agreed to speak at our September meeting. She is the Director of Cairn Presbyterian Camp. Rebecca has requested fabric scraps, wool ends and buttons. So Ladies it is time to clean out your closet and bring your items to the meeting. Now, I think we should show OUR “camp spirit” and come to the meeting dressed in our “camp attire”. Rebecca can judge the “Best Camper”. Is it time to meet another “Bad Babe of the Bible”? Well, you will have to come to the meeting to find out. All Ladies are welcome.
Every good camp needs refreshments. Are there any good campers that would like to provide the refreshments? Please remember that Rebecca has nut allergies. Please contact Laura 905-852-7947.

This week marked major progress in the Renewal of the Sanctuary.

The flooring in the pulpit and choir area and the new organ site is completed. Extensive wiring including significant upgrading has been finalized. Some finishing touches to the paneling under the organ pipes remain to be done. New carpeting has been installed throughout and in the church street entrance. Choir chairs have been ordered.

Cleaning has started with all indications we will be able to move back for Sunday worship, as scheduled, on September 12.

This remarkable transformation is due to the efforts of a dedicated group from the congregation providing a new look to our beautiful sanctuary that includes the best aspects of a current day setting.

Please make every effort to be on hand next Sunday. Invite family and friends, and celebrate with all those who have worked so hard, our best efforts to acknowledge with thanksgiving that which God has made possible.

Appeal for Pakistan Flood Relief WS&D

Severe monsoon rains and widespread flooding in Pakistan have affected the homes and livelihoods of over 20 million people—more than the Tsunami, Kashmir earthquake and Haiti earthquake combined. With a fifth of the country under water, millions of people are at risk for cholera and struggle for basic survival.

PWS&D Responds

Presbyterian World Service & Development is assisting flood victims through the Canadian Food grains Bank and the Action by Churches Together Alliance to provide food, shelter, emergency supplies and medical care for over 150,000 of the most affected people in the provinces of Balochistan, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (North West Frontier Province and Swat Valley).

Canadian Government Matching Donations

The Canadian International Development Agency is matching donations from individual Canadians from August 2 – September 12, 2010. For congregations sending PWS&D one cheque for the sum of all the donations they have collected for Pakistan Flood Relief, please include a letter identifying the names and amounts of individual donations that make up the total. This will ensure these funds are eligible for matching in the government’s Pakistan Floods Relief Fund.

Your Help is Needed

The people of Pakistan need your prayers and financial support to recover and rebuild from this disaster. You can make a donation to PWS&D by calling 1-800-619-7301 ext. 291, donating online, through your church or mailing a cheque to the office. Please mark all donations “Pakistan Flood Relief”.
