During the second week of August (August 8-12) Glenbrook will once again offer a half-day soccer camp for children from Glenbrook and our surrounding neighbourhood.
Called “UPWARD” , this unique sports program was started in 1986 by a recreation minister named Caz McCaslin who began an UPWARD Basketball program at a church in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Emphasis was placed on Christlikeness and good sportsmanship, not championships. Changed hearts and lives were seen in both those who played basketball and those who administered the league. Over the last 23 years the program has expanded to include not just the original basketball but also flag football, cheerleading and soccer. In 2007 alone some 500,000 children participated in UPWARD programs at churches throughout North America.
“This will be the third consecutive summer that Glenbrook will offer the UPWARD camp and we have seen its popularity grow,” says Pastor Ian. “The first year we had 40 children registered and last year that number jumped to 56.” In order for the camp to be successful we need a large number of vol-unteers to serve in a variety of roles: coaches, registration staff, crafts and devotion teachers, snack volunteers, photography and first aid. If you can volunteer to help with this year’s camp, please contact the office, or sign-up in the foyer after Sunday worship service starting April 10th.
If you would like to register your children for the camp, forms will be available in May. The cost of the camp is $50 per child.
