Glenbrook Plans Third Mission Trip to Nicaragua
Plans are now well underway for Glenbrook’s third misson trip to Nicaragua in the summer of 2011. The trip is being organized with support from, and in cooperation with, PAN (Presbyterians Aiding Nicaraguans). The actual dates of the trip are Saturday, July 30th to August 13th.
Mission trip members will have the opportunity to participate in one or more mission activities including: the establishment of a sports soccer ministry; and/or packing and delivering “care” packages to needy residents of Sandino; the demolition and re-construction of a church sanctuary for Elim Apostolica Pentecostal church in the City of Sandino. Unfortunately the current structure (at right), which is largely made of wood, has been badly infested with termites and needs to be torn down and replaced with a cement and steel structure.
The city of Sandino is home to approximately 72,000 mostly poor inhabitants who settled in the area following the 1972 earthquake.
The mission team members will work closely with Pastor Jose Campo and be supported by a team from PAN including drivers and translators. A knowledge of Spanish is helpful, but not necessary.
The trip is open to anyone 13 years of age and older as of July 30, 2011. The maximum number of people that can be accommodated on the trip is 25. Total cost per person will be $2,200 which includes airfare, transfers, dormitory-style accommodations and all meals. Trip cancellation insurance (if desired), personal spending money and laundry expenses will be extra. As with our previous two trips it is expected that the cost of the trip will be reduced through fundraising activities by Glenbrook as well as individual donations from the congregation.
Watch this space for more details of upcoming fundraising activities to support the trip. If you cannot go on the trip, there are still many ways in which you can be involved! Volunteers will be needed in the following areas:
During Glenbrook's 2008 trip to Nicaragua children and mission members alike enjoyed the popular soccer ministry!
-prayer support;
-fundraising event organizers/helpers;
-donations/collection/sorting of school supplies, clothing, games and toys and of course,
-financial support.
