Mary Gorombey ministers to refugee students in Budapest with the Reformed Church in Hungary. Mary is helping to integrate refugee youth into the Hungarian school system. She teaches Hungarian as a second language and tutors many students outside of class time in various subjects. An important part of her work is helping change stereotypes and attitudes in a climate that is not favourable to refugees.
As the daughter of a refugee, Mary feels especially called to refugee work. He father fled from Hungary and found a new home in Canada. As a result, she has experienced first-hand some of the challenges faced by children in a new culture.
Mary was born in Toronto. She grew up in First Hungarian Presbyterian Church in Toronto, and then transferred her membership to Knox, Spadina. She received an undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto in History and German, and also received a certificate in teaching ESL. She then completed a Masters degree in Library Science at the University of Western Ontario.
Mary has been interested in mission work for many years, and feels that it is something God has called her to do. She loves The Presbyterian Church in Canada and feels a strong need to serve in mission through our Church.
“As Christians,” she says, “every job we do is mission work. We are called to serve and be missionaries wherever God places us whether that be in a city/country we are familiar with, or someplace across the planet. I really thank Presbyterians Sharing for enabling me to be in Hungary and to be able to work with these youth. We’re here to make change in this world, and it can be done.”
Mary’s work is supported by Presbyterians Sharing.
