A headline from today’s Free Press Indore Journal reads: “2 suspected swine flu deaths confirmed”.

The article shares 10 confirmed deaths and 1 suspected death in Indore are swine flu related. Beside the picture of a piggie with a big snout, I read that in August of the 50 samples sent for testing, 35 have come back positive and 15 are still pending.

I think “don’t blame the pig, call it H1N1!” I also wonder “how many incidences there may have been in which no samples were sent”.

The Sari Diaries is a record of a year spent in Central India teaching community health nursing. Michelle Verwey is a young Canadian nurse interested in primary health care, who has fallen for India’s charm.

This is Michelle’s third trip to India and her longest to date. On her first trip, as a nursing student, she visited the Mid-India Board of Examiners (MIBE) Graduate School for Nurses in Indore. Michelle explains how that experience influenced her decision to return to India. “The MIBE Graduate School graciously provided me with room and board, and particular concern for my educational needs when completing my nursing practicum in 2008. While there, I noted the lack of up-to-date educational materials and the difficulty they have recruiting nursing educators. To return the favour for their hospitality I’ve been collecting donations of current educational materials and I am returning to Indore to teach community health nursing for the next year.”
