Tonight was a special night at KidsRoc. My Mom was able to come and stay with us for the night. I also brought my friend from Bowmanville named Angelynn.
I was excited to get in the Christmas mood and wore my pink Santa hat. When we got there we saw lots of Christmas things to decorate the Christmas tree and the church too. We played a really fun game where someone called out ‘Chicken, Cowboy or Conquer’ and we had to act out the action with a partner.
Next we went downstairs to do a craft. You had 5 different choices: 1. Sewing a Christmas tree, 2. Dangling pinecones, 3. Picture frame ornament, 4. A yarn covered cross, or 5. A 3D star. Auntie Dawn took the big kids upstairs to make a Advent candle. Everyone had a great time, learning to sew and making decorations to put on the church Christmas tree.
After craft time, we all went back upstairs to have a delicious treat and apple cider or hot chocolate with LOTS of whip cream. Everyone enjoyed singing Christmas Carols along with the piano.
Thank you to everyone who made this night fun! KidsRoc is a great place to meet new friends and learn more about God.

October 28, 2011 – “Food around the world”
On Friday, October, 28th many children got together for Kids Roc. For this session it was themed “food around the world” and we had a pot luck dinner, and everyone brought food that relates to their family’s background. Before we had dinner we said grace. We had a delicious meal that includes: Mashed potatoes with cheese, lasagna, flat tacos, a rice dish, wedding soup and rigatoni. Our place was set and we sat beside someone we didn’t know very well. Once we sat down we had to find something in common with the person beside us. When we had finished the main course, we had people come in that had lived in Africa. We learned interesting things about their food. At one of the tribes they thought that god gave them all the cows. If someone from another tribe was seen with a cow they got it. They also drank its blood along with the milk because they thought they had to drink cow’s blood to get blood in their body. We learned their dance (jumping as high as you can.) The tribe that they were talking about had houses made of cow waste. They also had a maze at the front of the house, so that animals couldn’t just wonder in. After they were done talking we looked at their African knick-knacks. They had some very interesting things such as : small sculptures, jewellery, musical instruments and more. Next we had dessert. It was almost as good as the main course. We had many great different kinds of desert. Afterwards we said a prayer, thanking God for our wonderful meal and teaching us about Africa. I am sure that we are all excited for the next kids roc to see what Auntie Dawn has planned for us.

October 14, 2011 – Won’t You be My Neighbour?
On Friday October 14th we had over 20 kids at St.Luke’s to celebrate this fun night! The theme of the evening was “Won’t You Be My Neighbour” and let me tell you being a neighbour and being a good neighbour are two totally different things. To start this fun night out, we were asked who was our neighbour and whether we were good to our neighbour. We then learnt about the Good Samaritan and talked about whether we would have done what the good Samaritan did. After that, we played tons of exhilarating games such as “Birdie on a Perch” which is a game were you have to work with your partner to complete the task that Auntie Dawn told you. But when she says birdie on a perch you have to sit down on your partner’s knee. Last pair sitting is out. After that we played the chocolate bar game. The point of the game was to cut the chocolate bar and then it was yours. Let me tell you that it sure got very competitive! We were then split up into teams to compete in a race. We had to hold a piece of tissue paper up in the air by inhaling air to hold it in place at the end of a straw. With a lot of breathing, running, cheering, and laughter the race was complete and a bunch of hungry kids came barging into the kitchen for a snack. But the whole point of the evening was to be a good neighbour and how we can be a good neighbour in our community. We then had two special guests come in to talk to us that evening. The first one was (drum roll please) Jamie, who works at the Simcoe Hall Settlement House in the after school program. All of our toonies that evening went towards getting toys for the kids there. The second person was (drum roll) Mr. Franklin, who talked to us about his volunteer work at the Settlement House’s Food Bank. Finally, to end this great night off we played a game called “Do You Love Your Neighbour” where we were asked if we love our neighbour by a person standing in the middle of the circle, and if we did the two people that we were sitting next to would have to try to change seats without the “it” person stealing it. If we didn’t love our neighbour then we would have to say what we love and then everybody who has what we love would have to switch places! We learnt a whole lot that Friday and can’t wait for our next Kids Roc which will be a potluck dinner, yum!

Thank you to everyone that provided the delicious snack of yogurt, homemade cookies and rich hot chocolate. It really was the perfect way to wrap up a night of such fun. I think we can all agree that everyone, including are amazing parent volunteers are looking forward to participating in the next Amazing Race. Of course nothing would be complete without a nice group photo to remember the laughs and good times had at the second reunion of Kids Roc.
A big thank you to our spectacular planners, Dawn and Lori who volunteered their time and put forth so much effort into making Friday the such a great night. Next I would like recognize all the parent volunteers for their supervision in ensuring everyone`s safety. I hope they too had as much fun as their groups. Thank you to Mrs. Black and her helpful hints, I think the groups would still be stuck at the hopping bunnies question if it weren`t for you!
I can`t wait until the next amazing race takes place, maybe next time I`ll remember bug spray.
Hope to see everyone at the next meeting on Friday the 14th to see what Dawn and her imaginative crew has in store for Kids Roc next!

September 16th, 2011 – How Kids have Fun Around the World
On Friday September 16th the Kids Roc group had a blast! The theme of Kids Roc was “how kids have fun around the world”. We got to experience how children in other countries spend their free time. To start off the night we played a game called blob tag, where one person was designated as “it”. They must try to “swallow” the other players by tagging them. Once someone is tagged they become “it” as well and must become part of the blob by linking arms with the other people that are it. The blob continues to grow until it has swallowed all the participants. After our enthralling game we learned a little bit about Africa and their customs. Young African girls carry 20% of their weight on their head miles so that they can sell their families goods at the market. As the children get older the weight increases to climax of 70%. Kids Roc tried to hold this weight and estimated how much it would hurt. It’s a good job that none of us were born in Africa! Next, Kids Roc ventured out into the backyard where they found bins of floating objects and a lake full of piranhas that they had to cross. We were all split into two groups and raced across the lake there and back trying not to loose a limb to the piranhas. Afterwards we raced inside hungry for snack but instead found ourselves a table filled with mushy, slimy, and repulsive looking pots of mystery food. One by one the brave members of Kids Roc stood at the front of the room, while the other Kids Roc members rated the faces they made from one to ten as the candidates tried to keep a straight face. Afterwards we had some snack and played a game that children in third world countries would play. They used holes in the ground and pebbles, we used egg cartons and seeds. We had to fill each egg carton hole with four seeds. We then took the seeds out of one egg carton hole and dropped a seed in each one after it moving clockwise and took the remaining seeds from the last hole they dropped a seed in. The winner was the player who emerged from the game with the most seeds left. To end the night, we sang a song called “Dare to run” and said a prayer thanking god that we live in a country that has materials to play with, good friends, and St. Lukes church. We all left the church content and looking forward to what next weeks “Amazing Race” Kids roc would have in store for us.
