About

With fewer than 500 settlers in the entire region, Rev. James Drummond MacGregor met with three elders from Scotland on Sept. 16, 1786, and formally began this congregation.  We are indeed the oldest continuing organization in Pictou County.  While computerized since 1990, our original church records (baptisms, marriages, etc.) are a wealth of history for this region for the past 225 years.  Our new minister, Rev. Andrew MacDonald, began here in March, 2019.  With a history of long ministries, only 13 clergy have served this congregation.  Referred to as “the mother of churches,” many congregations in eastern Canada owe their beginnings to the outreach ministry of James Church (our original name) and First Church (our name since 1907).  God has blessed us with the ability to send two missionaries to Korea a century ago, totally supported financially by this congregation.  Today, The Presbyterian Church in Canada is greatly strengthened by the support and faithfulness of many Korean families in Canada, a blessing to us from ministries and partnerships that began a century ago.  Today, First Church and Minister provide a well established ministry to the people of First.
