Praise despite circumstance

The Origin of Grain Rain

“…I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple.” (Isaiah 6:1)

“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:10-11)

Today I sit at my computer –

cursor blinking, mocking.

Today my mind is empty.

I don’t know what to say.

In the name of accomplishing that which you purpose,

we have killed your children, your trees, your lakes and streams.

Every day more news flashes across my screen.

“The kingdom of heaven has come near” –

yet it seems so far away!

You are the Lord.

You sit on your throne, high and lofty.

You give the Spirit.  You give your Word.

You anoint us in line with the prophets of old to speak your word to your people.

But our hearts are heavy.

Whether by our own actions or the actions of others,

we live in an age where there is little hope.

The sun still shines – so brightly it threatens cancer!

The world’s scientific community gathers together to create vaccines in record time – for the countries and communities who can afford them.

A tree is planted, a bird alights on the branch, rain waters the ground, the new crop breaks through – and new news breaks of past atrocities we’ve committed against your people, your world, your Word.

And yet, despite our fleeting feelings, we turn to you.

We trust your word.

You who creates, You who sustains, You who redeems,

You who is I AM.

Your Word is not empty.

So, we place our trust in you, Creator, Spirit, Son; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; Alpha and Omega; Holy, holy, holy Lord of hosts.

In the midst of the chaos, we remember your promise,

remember your Word,

remember your Gospel,

and Praise the Lord along with everything that has breath this day.
