“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” (John 1:12)
“I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)
“I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves.” (John 17:13)
This post might seem like a bit of a cop-out on my part because I’m not going to write anything that could be described as a reflection/meditation/homily/sermon/etc. Sometimes it is worth while for the preacher to stop talking and let the words of Scripture speak for themselves. To that end, in this devotion, I want to suggest that you:
- Memorize these verses.
- As you’re memorizing them, take note of what images and emotions they evoke. Also, take note of what questions are prompted by these readings.
- Follow up on the questions of which you took note. Feel free to contact Rev. Ian if you’re looking for clarification.
- Come back to these verses throughout the day/week. Recite/pray them when you’ve realized that you haven’t thought about God for some time. Think about the implications of these words when you’re frustrated/tired/discouraged/joyful/inspired. Give thanks to Jesus for these promises.
- Make these verses your “centering verses” to remind you of your grace-given identity in Christ. When we receive Jesus in faith, we are adopted as children of God, with all the inherited promises that entails. No matter what we’re facing today, that identity stands firm.
