Grant Sayers began playing the organ for worship on May 24, 1942, at the age of 19, at St. Andrew’s, Priceville, Ont. During his 65 years at the keys he has experienced the usual challenges of congregational life, including working with 13 ministers and numerous junior and senior choirs. After a festival of music celebrating his service on May 20, he remarked, “There wasn’t a minister I didn’t get along with.”

During his tenure he has seen six men from his church enter the ministry; one being his own brother, Willis.

He received tributes from representatives from various levels of government, including Premier Dalton McGinty. In addition, the Presbytery of Grey Bruce Maitland expressed their congratulations. Edmond MacFarlane, an elder at St. Andrew’s, presented Grant with a commemorative wall plaque.

Grant Sayers has been a farmer his whole life. He still operates a small farm on Hwy 4, about 88 kilometres south-west of Priceville. He is an active member of the Gospel Couriers, a men’s chorus in the area. They sing every Tuesday evening at area nursing homes, as well as church anniversaries.

Today, St. Andrew’s, Priceville, is a congregation of 40 people who are dedicated to serving the community. The church is not only a place for worship on Sunday mornings, but it serves as a music and social centre where all may participate. Events include, festivals of music, fish-fry suppers, and old time music, kirkin’ ‘o the tartan celebrations and vacation Bible school.

In July 2005, many believed Grant’s organ playing days were over when he became seriously ill. He was confined to hospital for many months and had to endure many weeks of therapy. He returned to the console on Easter Sunday the next year. He received a standing ovation. “I have been looking forward to this day for a long time,” he said.

Grant Sayers, organist, gentleman and God’s servant has made and continues to make a valuable contribution to the worship and life of St. Andrew’s. A genuine minister of music.

Well done thou good and faithful servant.
