WWF—On March 28, iconic buildings including Toronto’s CN Tower and London’s Big Ben went dark for Earth Hour 2009.
The international event encouraged individuals and businesses to turn off their lights from 8:30 to 9:30 as a way of expressing concern about climate change and energy consumption.
The annual event began in Sydney, Australia with 2 million participants in 2007, and grew to 50 million participants worldwide in 2008. Organizers hoped for one billion participants in 2009.
