Favourite Hymns

Re Music articles, February

I really enjoyed Hilary Donaldson’s article on Jump With Joy and want to thank her for including some examples from our Book of Praise. I played and sang through her five examples and am familiar with them.

I am involved in the Music Ministry at St. Giles, Prince George, BC. We operate on a volunteer basis. I play the piano and enjoy singing with a group of people. The pianists (a shared responsibility) choose four Praise Songs every Sunday from a variety of sources. Sometimes these choices become a collaborative effort amongst the Music Team members and our Minister. I do use Praise Songs from the Book of Praise.

Here are my choices of five hymns that our congregation is familiar with. Lord the Light of Your Love Is Shining or Shine, Jesus, Shine (376) as we affectionately call this hymn, is a hymn of praise. On Eagles Wings (57) is a setting of Psalm 90. There are other Psalms that are set to music in the Book of Praise and they are wonderful. We also like As The Deer (27). Fairest Lord Jesus (375) is a favourite. We also enjoy, I Have Decided to Follow Jesus (570) (a good example of a Folk Hymn/Gospel), and He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands (339) (Gospel). It is very hard to narrow it down to five choices!

Some other categories that can have favourite hymns include Advent and Christmas, Easter, Two-Part hymns (rounds) and hymns with Descants, and Children’s Hymns for Praise choices.

Thank you for your various contributors discussing Music in the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
