May 22: Farewells

“Farewell, farewell, but not forever!” the Malawians sang as the Canadians began, one by one, to vanish into Chileka airport security.

The had spent their final time together seated on a balcony overlooking the runway, waiting for the distant silver gleam which would grow into an airplane. When it landed with a roar, everyone cheered. But it was a bittersweet moment. It was time to go home.

With things learned and sights seen still fresh in their minds, what would “home” look like? Would it be the same familiar place? And as they snuggled back into their routines, would their lives feel as comfortable? Or would discomfort, with all its lessons to teach, be sitting patiently nearby?
