Home-made Advent Calendar

In our house, the  table sits in the window, and the light comes in. Outside, we have a tiny garden space, then a tall and somewhat scraggling hedge, and then the street.  When we are sitting at the table, we can hear people passing on the street, cars going by, the wind in the hedge.  Other flats nearby have Christmas trees in their windows, but we like our table where it is.

But, the space between the windows and over the table was perfect for our advent calendar. I mentioned earlier that we might make one, and this is what we came up with. I strung a piece of fishing line over the table, and each day, one of us made something to hang up. The original plot had been all fun foam, but inspiration stretched a bit. Paper, card, beads, sequins, wool, felt, and bamboo skewers. Whatever was on hand and seemed to fit the bill.

We’ve been using Brian Wren’s Hope is a Star as our Advent hymn at church, so some of the images have cropped up in our decorations.  It started with a clothes peg angel that Blue made at church, and then some stars made of gold paper. We have cut-out snowflakes, a foam Christmas tree, and the best donkey that Beangirl has ever drawn, ever.

I could mention that making a mobile takes a little effort and you learn about balance. Not sure if I really need to flag that for you; it might be obvious.

Each week, we’ve added words to the mix, so you can find hope, peace, joy, and love, all hanging above our table.

It is lovely having moving art above our heads. The work of our own hands. We might leave it there a while.

It looks like our celebration.
