Saturday, December 21, 2013 — Some Rhythm of Sabbath

Christian Sabbath, Sunday, not Jewish Sabbath. This need for some rhythm of Sabbath in life is so essential. And in December we are so likely to add to all the busyness even more obligations …

So two prayers, one from Matthew Braddock of Silver Spring, Maryland, and the second one from Cody Maynus, newly of New Haven, Connecticut, who took for himself a discipline of intention brevity in this book From the Psalms to the Cloud as a way to be faithful to the digital era.

Glimpses of Sabbath:

The idea of carving time for rest from my massive to-do list oppresses me.
It’s just impossible:
one more item to check off,
one more expectation to fulfill,
one more possibility for failure.

God, you are busy. Yet you are free enough to rest.
I get glimpses of Sabbath. I think I want more.
Help me discover a holy moment – just one simple, undemanding, deep-breath moment –
to enjoy some freedom.

—Matthew Braddock

A Prayer for Somebody Embracing a Simpler Lifestyle:

God: Help me get rid of the junk in my life – physical, emotional, spiritual – so I can be fully present to you, to my community, and to myself.

—Cody Maynus
