Saturday, January 18, 2014 — To Make Things Right

In this dance of knowing and unknowing, between contemplative silence and active engagement with social issues, between praying with words and praying with the silence, we have much to learn from those who follow other spiritual paths.

One of things common prayer does is to bring us into harmony with the wholeness. Ho’oponopono in Hawaiian means “to make things right, to return things to harmony.” It is a traditional healing practice, with an emphasis on healing relationships, families, and communities.

Hawaiian chant can be compared to Hindu Sanskrit mantra in that to pray it properly requires training in how to use “heart energy.” The inflections of the breath are as important as the words. Prayer is seen as a calling forth, a reaching out and a drawing in. Here is a Hawaiian chant called E Ho Mai.
