Friday, February 14, 2014 — Pennies

Pennies, the smallest unit of US currency, have always had special meaning for The Welcome Church. Because we are a congregation of people with very little money, we began our first service by asking people to start picking up pennies from wherever they found them. It wasn’t the money that was important, but rather the words written at the top of the penny, “In God We Trust.” We used the pennies as a reminder that not only could God be found everywhere, but that we could trust that God was with us, no matter what we were going through. People began to place their pennies on whatever table we were using as an altar, sharing the stories of all the places they were found and how they found them just as they needed a reminder to trust God.

As we begin this new day, may we be “finders” rather than “seekers” trusting that we will find the face of God this day, reminding us that in all we do, God is with us.

Incarnate God,
Open the eyes of our heart that we might see your face this day
Help us to celebrate the joys that will come our way
and to trust that you will be with us in the sorrows.
Give us the wisdom to look for you
in places that seem most unlikely in our own limited
understanding of who you are;
and may your light shine through us
that others may see your face
in all we do. Amen.
