The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whatever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
—Rumi

I first met Darren when he was living under the bridge. Because he suffered neuropathy in his feet from a related medical condition, Darren did not fully feel the biting cold that would lead to two of his toes needing to be removed.

Not long after the amputation, Darren learned about the ancient practice of footwashing during one of the Bible studies we held in preparation for our Maundy Thursday service. Darren loved the story in John’s gospel, but struggled with the shame around his feet. He was adamant about not participating in the service .

There was no pressure, but after much prayer and reflection Darren asked if he could have his feet washed, exposing the place where his toes had been cut off to save his life. Of course we said yes.

His brave and humble gesture led to a relationship with podiatrists who offered their service to people living on the street. It also helped Darren to believe that things could be different, a fresh start.

Today Darren has his own place and shares his story with others, offering the radical hope of the gospel.

Tomorrow, who will show up at your door and how will they be greeted?

Sit today with the words of the ancient poet Rumi:

Be grateful for whatever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond…
Amen
