Wednesday, July 2, 2014 — Positivity

Good morning! First cup of coffee has set in.  And with it, a wave of powerful positivity to dive headfirst into a worthy project. Mornings often start out that way for me. Once that coffee kicks in, with chin up and fresh resolve, most days I start out determined to make a positive dent in the day. But just as often, as obstacles start to mount and progress slows to an excruciating pace, second-guessing sets in and my commitment caneasily dwindle. Sometimes I’m no longer sure if the cause is worth it, nor if I have the capacity to have an impact. It takes a special inner reserve to persevere despite the seemingly insurmountable barriers. At the same time, we all need to realize we are not doing the work alone. In fact, we are quite simply a vehicle through which God’s work is being done. That usually helps me put it into perspective. That, and the recognition that the initial eagerness was prompted by the Spirit to begin with; and the talents and skills to follow through are likewise God-given gifts. It’s all part of his plan, his work. Paul’s words help inspire (reprimand?): Last year you were the first not only to give, but also to have the desire to do so. Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. (2Cor 8:10-11) Whether I understand it or not, whether I particularly like it or not, it is what I am being called to do, with the skills and opportunities he has gifted. I honestly believe that we can make a difference by our willingness to hear God’s word, and by accepting the challenge to serve others – so that it’s his work, his glory that shines through.

Prayer:
Inspire me, God, to make a difference. Help me see and hear what it is you need me to do. Thank you for entrusting me with the skills needed to make a difference. Strengthen and encourage me to take the risk to start – and to follow through – so that your work can continue. Help me not to be overwhelmed by the magnitude of the task, nor by the barriers, but simply respond in the way you need me to do. Help me remember you are there directing the way and the means. Thank you for leading me step-by-step.
