Friday, July 4, 2014 —The Words of My Mouth

Psalm 19:14
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing in your sight,
O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

We’ve all been in situations where we’ve said something we instantly regret and wish we could take back. Words can really hurt and create some real damage in relationships or situations. Worse still, pride can then take hold and prevent us from correcting our mistakes and apologising, and the situation spirals deeper and deeper into trouble. As difficult as it is to practice, having self-control in speech and thought is our goal. It’s brilliant that “Be impeccable with your word” is the first and foundational “agreement” Miguel Ruiz outlines for a transformational impact on your life. Listening first, and then using words to bless, not hurt, is a worthy goal. For that, we need real help! Thank goodness we can turn to God in prayer to help us be ever mindful of the impact of our words on others.

Prayer: Creator, who makes all things new, thank you for the blessing of this new day. Help me live each moment today conscious of your guiding presence. In particular, create in me an awareness of the impact my words can have on others. Let it sink in that our words define us; and help us let those words reflect You. Especially in difficult situations, keep me mindful of choosing my words carefully, so that problems can move towards solutions rather than towards disaster. When I do misspeak, help me acknowledge that quickly and work towards resolving the difficulty I may have created. Help me use my words to bless others; and where it might be even better, help me use no words all, but to simply listen. May we feel your Spirit’s presence strongly today to help us along. In your loving care, we pray.
