Friday, September 26, 2014 — Food and Justice

Today’s theme is about food justice.

Food plays a central role in the Bible. Jesus spent his last day eating with friends, his ministry about feeding those who were hungry with food and soul food. Abraham welcomed visitors with food, and Moses received guidance from God about relationship with food.

In a world where many go hungry, and a world where many spend grand sums for exotic food, we are reminded in Jesus that we pray for ‘our daily bread, that is, enough bread or food to do us.

As a person with a weight issue, I have come to see that my weight has not always been from from over consumption, but from poor food choices due to financial difficulties. When our economic circumstances are not the best, we often choose food that is cheap but lacking in nutrients. I call this ‘roofed poverty’, a roof over our head but not much to sustain what lives beneath.

And so we pray:
God who feeds us in many ways, we are grateful for the food we have. May we purchase wisely so that farmers benefit, and that we benefit. Thank you God. Amen.
