We all know that bees play an important role in plant pollination. Bees either focus on gathering nectar or on gathering pollen depending on demand.. Bees gathering nectar may accomplish pollination, but bees that are deliberately gathering pollin are more efficient pollinators. It is estimated that one third of the human food supply depends on insect pollination, most of which is accomplished by bees.

Now what if we applied that to Advent? What if we became Advent bees pollinating the world around us with hope, peace, joy and love. What if saw our spiritual lives as gathering nectar or pollen…whatever was necessary to spread to one another. What if one moment a situation needed hope and we could pollinate it with hope or if a situation needed peace or joy or love and we pollinated it with peace or joy or love. Could you imagine what our world would be like if we began to act more like bees…I think maybe in some ways Jesus did this. He encountered people and their life situations and pollinated it with God’s nectar of forgiveness, or love, or a new beginning or healing.

What if today we intentionally for one day lived like Advent Bees and opened our ears and hearts to the stories we encounter this day and pollinate it with what that person needed. And then what if we tried to stretch it to two days…what if we challenged our families, our churches…our small gatherings. Imagine the possibility of something special happening around us. Spend the day being intentionally busy as an Advent bee. And if anyone asks you what you are doing you simply respond…”Well I am doing some Advent pollinating silly…”.

And so as we begin this day I offer this prayer…

O Holy One,
your world is in need of each one of us.
Rather than we wait for you to answer the needs of the world,
may we enter this day and step up and be Advent people who by our words and actions
show you are here in our midst.
May we gather and spread your love to those around us…
in the name of the one who nourished people. Amen!!
