Monday: For Last Year’s Words

“For last year’s words belong to last year’s language
And next year’s words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.”
(From “Little Gidding” by T. S. Eliot)

As we begin this week together, I invite you to consider how endings are, at the same time, beginnings. There are many clichés about doors closing and doors opening, most of which you already know, and none of which I will use. While we pray this Monday morning, I invite you to picture a door through which you will walk.

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1: 1

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”. John 1:1

Two stories of beginning; our lives are filled with beginnings, many of them resulting from something as simple as an opening door.

Loving God, there are many doors in my life
I have already walked through many of them
Some I have opened with trepidation
Some I have slammed in anger
But each one of them has brought about changes
I pray that, as I go through the doors remaining to me
I will find that what you have planned for me
To be exactly what I need
Help me to see each door as the start
Of a new adventure
One which I will walk with you as my guide
Amen
