Thursday: Winter is the King of Showmen

“Winter is the king of showmen
Turning tree stumps into snow men
And houses into birthday cakes
And spreading sugar over lakes
Smooth and clean and frosty white
The world looks good enough to bite
That’s the season to be young
Catching snowflakes on your tongue
Snow is snowy when it’s snowing
I’m sorry it’s slushy when it’s going”
(Winter Morning Poem by Ogden Nash)

“As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.” (Genesis 8: 22)

Lord, every morning I look out
To see a world of whiteness
And I remember the winters past
Winters when the cold didn’t matter
And I was eager to get outside
These days, I am not so eager
I am nervous about losing my balance
On a slippery patch
I am afraid about falling

And this is not only physical
I fear falling away from you
I fear that, in my desire to maintain my balance,
I will forget to focus on you

Help me to remember that
You will bear me up
That you will prevent me from falling
That I need fear no evil
For you are with me
This winter day and
Every day to come
Amen
