Destined to Die

Re You Have Been Saved, April
“Considering the doctrine of predestination,” which I thought was a very well expressed article; I’ve been told that predestination isn’t believed anymore in the Presbyterian Church in Canada.

Growing up in Carleton Place, Ont., I knew a family who believed that, “They were destined to die, because it was written in the book with a particular time and date.” My grandmother thought they were pretty queer. The area was settled by Scots Presbyterians and the Cameronian sect still has a “reformed Presbyterian church” in Almonte, which like the Wee Free’s (Free church of Scotland) is  fundamentalist.

I’m an Anglican who enjoys reading the Presbyterian Record, and I’m glad to see where the Presbyterian Church is still “orthodox” compared with the United church which I feel has a too liberal theology.

I’m told that my religion is too conservative. I asked my Anglican rector in Toronto, do we believe in “Predestination?”

The 39 articles, article XVII addresses Predestination and Election, Book of Common Prayer, 1962 Canada. I find the Articles of Religion very difficult to understand as they were written at the time of the reformation in England and they are very Protestant and not Catholic.

I  knew Lucy Maud Montgomery  had problems with depression. We all have times where we question theology and I think that is healthy.
