Feeding the Five Thousand

I was at a family get together recently. Of course, this involved a lot of eating, talking and kids crying but all in all it was a good event. More and then more people arrived and I found myself dragging out some hamburgers from the deep freeze. I had brought them to the house earlier, thinking they could be eaten the next day. But no way. This was a hungry crowd so I set them on the counter and separated the patties as best I could. One of the members looked at me and said “Do you suppose that is how Jesus fed the 5,000, with food that all the grandmas had brought?”

The comment brought laughter to those standing in the kitchen and yes, we set the hamburger on the barbeque and family and friends were fed and satisfied.

Grandmas do have a sixth sense about things I believe. I not only arrived with frozen hamburger and buns but two pies, a batch of banana muffins, and some cupcakes. I think they all disappeared.

I have no doubt that the feeding of the 5,000 was a miracle but sometimes God performs miracles in today’s world too. When we arrived earlier we actually thought we would be the only ones there… time for grandma to play with the great-grandchildren, time to chat with my grandson… but no way, the tiny living room was bursting at the seams and overflowing its contents into the kitchen and out on the lawn. When all were fed and the dishes done I looked at the group and announced that as the oldest person in the place I was saying my goodbyes and heading for my hotel… I’ve been just feeding just myself for the last seven years of my widowhood… this had been a pretty wild evening for an old timer.

I’m so glad I had been there to be part of the feeding of the… well 50 anyway. I really think God has a great sense of humour… I, who never cook had made all this food for the kids and I doubt if they had hardly a taste. But not a drop was wasted and everyone had a good time. Sometimes God’s plans are a little different than what we had on our list.

And who knows, there were probably lots of grandmas at the feeding of the 5,000. I wouldn’t be surprised if they weren’t part of God’s plan too.
