God’s Gifts

Some of you may remember that old song “There’s a blue bird on my window sill…” Last week there was one on mine…well not a blue bird but a blue jay.

The window is covered with a screen but I am sure he would have come right into the house if it hadn’t been there…he tried twice.

There are some moments in life when incidents are so precious you can see God’s smile in them.  Many years ago I sat visiting with a friend in her garden.  I happened to have on a blue dress so maybe that was an invitation to the lovely butterfly that gently settled there.  I was mesmerized.  It was like a soft kiss from a child…so sweet and so unforgettable.

This summer I arrived home and pulled into the driveway.  Normally I drive right into the garage but was just stopping to grab a paper I needed.  As I turned to go up the front steps there was a chipmunk.  I would have missed him entirely if I had entered the garage.  It was almost like God was saying…”Stop this hurry, hurry…look and enjoy what I have set in your very path.”

We need more of these stop signs in our life.  This week I had a few bad days and decided it might be best to step back from commitments and stay home.  I missed coffee at the mall, church and a 90th birthday party for a friend. (We however, enjoyed a personal chat on the phone.)  I have found that the world goes on, without my participation in some of its activities.

I read three books I had on hand…books by Christian authors that gave me some new insights…nothing heavy and two of them were fiction, but you can sometimes find yourself in other peoples stories and reflect on their reactions to similar experiences .

But I did spend time looking out the front window at the view now exposed as the leaves have fallen, and I waved to all my neighbours in our condo complex who drove by. I stepped outside and picked four frozen pansies (stiff as boards believe it or not) and they thawed out and looked pretty for a day or two.  I heard and saw several flocks of geese fly overhead (would have missed them if I had been at the mall.)  All in all I have had a bit of a holiday…responsible only to myself.  Of course, a steady diet of this lifestyle wouldn’t interest me, but sometimes we all need to step back and smell the roses.

Sometimes God speaks to us in life and literature and sometimes he sends blue jays and chipmunks.  He always knows what our needs are and what will fill our hearts today.
