This recipe originally appeared in the December 2001 issue of the Presbyterian Record (you can download a pdf of the page here). By request, here it is again. Sand art brownies make a great gift (and a great craft for Sunday school.)
Sand Art Brownies
Layer the following ingredients in a one-quart mason jar in the order given. Do not mix the ingredients.
½ tsp salt
½ cup + 2 Tbsp flour
½ cup cocoa
½ cup flour + ½ tsp baking powder
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
2/3 cup white sugar
½ cup chocolate chips
½ cup white chips
Fill the rest of jar with chopped nuts
Place the lid on securely. You may attach a circle of holiday fabric to the lid with an elastic band.
On the back of your gift card, include the following instructions so your recipient can turn their “sand art” into brownies:
Combine contents of jar with:
1 tsp vanilla
2/3 cup oil
3 eggs
Mix well. Pour into greased and floured 9” x 9” pan. Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Enjoy!
