Thursday, April 24, 2014 — The Upper Room

Many of us led or attended Maundy Thursday services last week. We took our place around a table – for a meal, for the Lord’s Supper. We’re a diverse group. The group gathered with Jesus may well have included more people than the disciples – they were probably more diverse than they seemed at first glance, too.

They ate, prayed, said prayers, perhaps sang Psalms. In our services, erhaps we will sing this song. If not, I invite you to sing it as your evening prayer.

An Upper Room Did Our Lord Prepare

1 An upper room did our Lord prepare
for those he loved until the end:
and his disciples still gather there
to celebrate their risen friend.
2 A lasting gift Jesus gave his own:
to share his bread, his loving cup.
Whatever burdens may bow us down,
he by his cross shall lift us up.
3 And after supper he washed their feet,
for service, too, is sacrament.
In Christ our joy shall be made complete:
sent out to serve, as he was sent.
4 No end there is! We depart in peace.
He loves beyond our uttermost:
in every room in our Father’s house
Christ will be there, as Lord and Host.
