Friday, September 19, 2014 — A Home for the Homeless

How can CASA become a “home for the homeless”? A place of welcome for those who have given up on religion or have been hurt by “church”?

This morning I invite us to receive the day in silence just “leaning on the everlasting arms”, sitting with the G-d at home in us. Dwelling on what Calvin called G-d’s “benevolentia”: a lovingkindness that I find difficult to put into words. As difficult as parsing the word “hesed” in the Hebrew Bible.

In “The Feeding of the 5000” story, the disciples suggested that Jesus “send the crowds away”. (Lk 9:12) Jesus responds by saying “You give them something to eat”. And they did. And so can we. Can it be that there is a place inside each of us where we can find the food that will feed others? And no one needs to be sent away because there is enough for us all.

Prayer: With the bread we need for today, feed us. In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us. In times of temptation and testing, strengthen us. From trials too great to endure, spare us. From the grip of all that is evil, free us. Amen.
