Sunday, October 26, 2014 — A Consuming Fire

For our God is a consuming fire. (Hebrews 12:29 ESV)

John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. (Luke 3:16 ESV)

Ignite me. Burn me. Consume me.

Violate the unsettled rest and breathe life into dying embers.

“Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rage at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light…”
Dylan Thomas

Malachi 3:1-3
“I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty.

2 But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify (us) and refine (us) like gold and silver.”

Refiner’s fire = purify.

So then, go soft into the night.
Peace, gentleness,humility, compassion be yours.
Love.

“12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” (Colossians 3:12-15)

In the duality of the human spirit, Lord, be with us. Comfort us. Calm the tumultuous waters and command the storm to be still.

Peace.
Rest.
Calm.

Still waters.
Trust.
Faith.

Love.

Thank you Lord.
