Monday, November 17, 2014 — Foolish Bridesmaids

Many of us preached using the Parable of the Bridesmaids last week…so I want to share some of my thoughts from my sermon from Saturday…

Are we like the five foolish bridesmaids who couldn’t wait to see if they actually needed more oil or not…were they so scared of being in the dark that they had to take the chance and miss the arrival of the bridegroom…God meets us in the darkest places in our lives, why you ask because God is waiting for us there…the darkest can be that holy place God wants us to experience.

Are we like the five wise bridesmaids who couldn’t share for fear of not having enough…foes that actually make them wise because they came prepared but unwilling to share…Perhaps God wants us to step out of our comfort zone and give even when it scares us to give…God is waiting for us when we step outside that comfort zone, because God is full of grace and compassion for us. That space can be a holy place God wants us to experience.

Are we like the bridegroom who won’t open the door…have we closed the door on others keeping them from “our holy place” because they weren’t prepared…they weren’t like us…they were different…God hasn’t closed the door on us, God’s grace is freely given…God welcomes each and everyone of us in, and when we open doors for those who are different, who don’t fit in…a holy place is created and God I believe is pleased.

God of grace…just as the sun rises in the morning and sets in the evening, be with your children gathered on this page…as we all go about the tasks of life remind us that you are always present…that you have given us holy places to experience your grace and compassion…we ask all this in Jesus the Christ’s name…Amen
