Golden Arm Quilters

“Blessed are the piece makers!” Get it? That’s what it says on the quilt here.

Twice a week, for 25 years, a group of women who called themselves the Golden Arm Quilters (they love their puns!) met to make quilts. About 15 a year; which were then donated or sold (some to places as far off as Scotland and Saudi Arabia) with proceeds for the Boularderie pastoral charge, Cape Breton, N.S., and other community organizations. A service of recognition and thanks was held at St. James last year. Rev. Susan Smith said, “We really thank God for these women of faith who stuck together for so long. They’ve played a very important role in the church. Their contributions will be greatly missed because everything we needed, there were there for us. They’ve given thousands upon thousands of dollars to the church and the community.” Blessed are the piece makers, indeed. Membership has declined over the years as time has taken its toll on these peacemakers and fundraisers.

The quilt bears the name of the members. Rev. Smith is seen with Gavinna MacKenzie, group president.
