Religious groups go green

ENI — Religious groups have joined civic groups and international companies that include Volvo and General Electric in backing The Path to Climate Sustainability by the Global Roundtable on Climate Change. The coalition of more than 150 groups is calling for governments to set “scientifically informed targets” for reducing greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide emissions.
“Global warming is an urgent problem that is not only affecting God's planet but also God's people,” said Rev. Robert Edgar, general secretary of the U.S. National Council of Churches, at a February conference to launch the initiative.
Rev. Samuel Kobia, general secretary of the World Council of Churches, described the statement as being “carefully drafted and urgently needed”. He said the council will continue to bring “the concerns this statement addresses to the world”.
The statement urges an increase in the use of non-fossil fuel energy sources, and recommends a market price be placed on carbon emissions to reward energy efficiency.
