Wrong Directions

In the November issue you report that a typhoon “ravished” southern Taiwan. Surely what the typhoon did was “ravaged” Taiwan. Same root but not the same meaning. Spell checkers don’t make the distinction any more than they do between “than” and “then,” “there” and “their,” or “cavalry” and “Calvary,” for that matter.

In the December issue, I find that Andrew Faiz would travel north from Toronto to go to Crieff. Unless Crieff Hills has been moved since I lived in Guelph nine years ago, it is still located on the Maclean Estate south of Guelph, and is mostly west and a little south of Toronto. Good luck to Faiz getting to his next retreat by heading toward Barrie.
