About Our Minister

The Rev. W. Alex Bisset has been the minister of the Riverdale and Westminster Pastoral Charge since May, 2006. Alex holds a B.A. in history and English literature from Wilfrid Laurier, an M.A. in medieval literature from the University of Toronto, and an M.Div. from Knox College. Alex is married to the Rev. Emily Bisset, and has three children.

Alex is especially interested in worship and preaching. He enjoys helping people see the relevance of the Bible in our contemporary context. He also values the experience of being invited into the lives of families and individuals at times of joy, sorrow, and crisis.

Alex believes that a minister’s work must happen outside the walls of the church building as well as inside it. Because of that belief, he serves as the President of the Board of Directors of Westminster Court Senior’s Housing Corporation of East York, and is the Chaplain of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 10 Todmorden. He is the Clerk and a former Moderator of the Presbytery of East Toronto, and previously served for 6 years as the convener of the Presbytery’s Administration Committee. He has also previously served on the Boards of the Cairn Family of Camps (Convener, 2014-2017), the Flemingdon Community Mission (FCM), and the Ecumenical Chaplaincy at the University of Toronto (ECUT). He has acted as a small group leader at Canada Youth and was the Clergy Mentor for the Synod Presbyterian Young Peoples’ Group from 2014 to 2018.

Before entering the ministry, Alex spent ten years as a lexicographer with Oxford University Press Canada. He still enjoys writing whenever he can, and his work has been published in a number of magazines and periodicals.
