History

Worshiping and Serving in Hanwell for over 130 years:

Our story as a community of faith can be traced to 1883, when we began worshiping at the “Meeting Place,” a building given to the community for use by all denominations for worship.

Sometime prior to 1910, the Meeting Place became a congregation within the Presbyterian Church in Canada.

From 1910-1925, we were part of a multiple point charge with St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Fredericton.  In 1925, however, St. Paul’s became part of the newly formed United Church of Canada.  When St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church was built in Fredericton shortly thereafter, they provided ministry support to St. James.

In 1936, a fire destroyed the Meeting Place.  St. James re-built and the new church building was dedicated on September 17, 1939.

When we outgrew the church building, we moved to our present location.  We dedicated the new church building on April 13, 1989. The original building, which had been located by the church cemetery, was sold and moved by its new owner.  By the grace of God our congregation continued to grow we expanded and renovated the church building in 1997.

We are thankful for God’s steadfast goodness and the many people who have contributed to congregational life over the years.
