New to St. James

Whether you’re new to church or just new to St. James, we’re glad you are here. We know visiting a church for the first time can feel a little daunting, but we hope you’ll feel genuinely welcomed and at ease.

Below are answers to some common questions—but if you have others, don’t hesitate to contact us.

What should I wear?

Come as you are! People wear anything from jeans and shorts to dresses or business casual. No need to dress up unless you want to—just come comfortably.

Where can I park?

We have a parking lot directly beside the church.  Accessible parking spots are near the entrance.

How early should I arrive?

Most people arrive 5–20 minutes before the service starts at 11 a.m. Some come earlier to visit, read the bulletin, or settle in. Don’t worry if you’re a little late—greeters are happy to assist.

What should I expect when I arrive?

As you enter, a greeter (or two) will offer you a bulletin outlining the service. Scripture readings and hymn numbers are included, and Bibles and hymnbooks are in the pews. The bulletin notes when you’re invited to stand (in body or spirit). We also show the worship content on screen as well.

Rachel, our pastoral pup, is on hand to greet people.  She is a social shih tzu, good with all ages and hair, rather than fur.

You’ll also notice our livestream setup. Our tech support may be recording as you arrive, so be mindful of conversations near the camera.

Is the church accessible?

We are.  Accessible parking spots can be found by the entrance, and we offer both wide-steps with rails and a ramp for entering the building.  Our sanctuary set-up has wider aisles and spacing between chairs to accommodate mobility aids.  If you have special seating requirements, for physical or audio-visual needs, please let a greeter know so we can help you.

During worship, there are times when the minister will invite you to stand, physically or in spirit.  Please remain seated (i.e., stand in spirit) if preferred or needed.  Also, if you need to get up and move about during service, please do not hesitate to do so.

The washrooms are also designed with physical accessibility in mind and we continue to explore new ways to improve accessibility.

We are all one level and all the other rooms, including the hall, are easily accessible.  We do have a wheelchair on site though if you would like a bit more assistance.

Service dogs are welcome.

At the request of our session Board of Managers, Ability New Brunswick has recently conducted an accessibility review of our building and facilities. We’re grateful for their guidance and are actively working on ways to improve accessibility so that everyone feels welcome and at home at St. James.

What about children?

Children are invited to join J.A.M. – Jesus and Me – during worship. This time includes stories, discussion, and hands-on activities led by our youth leaders—helping kids grow in faith and friendship. Snacks provided too!

The children join in worship for the first 15 minutes (approximately) so that they have an opportunity to worship with everyone.  We do have a table with a treasure chest filled with activity and story books should children want to multi-task.

What’s the atmosphere like?

We hope you’ll find our services warm, meaningful, and engaging. Worship is thoughtfully and prayerfully prepared to help you encounter God’s grace through Scripture, prayer, music, and reflection.

Hospitality matters to us—not just as a friendly gesture, but as a way of helping people feel more connected and engaged in worship and congregational life. It’s through welcome and presence that we foster meaningful relationships with one another.

What is the music like?

Our worship includes a mix of classic and contemporary hymns, accompanied by organ. Sometimes we’re blessed by some special music too.

Will I be asked to give money?

An offering is part of our service, but you are not expected to give.

Offering is an act of gratitude and commitment to God’s work—monetary or otherwise. Whether you give time, skill, kindness, or funds, all gifts are valued.

If you do choose to give, offering envelopes are available in the pew racks and, if you attend regularly, you may wish to request a set of envelopes.

What happens after worship?

Join us in the hall for light refreshments and conversation. It’s a relaxed way to meet new friends and learn more about St. James.  There is even a puzzle table for our puzzle enthusiasts!

What if there’s a snowstorm?

If bad weather leads to a service cancellation, we’ll send an email and post updates on social media. Thanks to technology, we’re often still able to livestream a shortened service from church or home.
