In 1960, a group of Taiwanese Christian immigrants in Toronto began gathering for Bible study and fellowship, sharing faith and life. As the group grew in numbers, they started holding their own worship services at Leaside Presbyterian Church. On the first Sunday of March 1975, the fellowship was officially established as a church, becoming Toronto Formosan Presbyterian Church (TFPC). On December 26 of the same year, the church became a member of the Presbyterian Church in Canada (PCC).
By 1982, the congregation had grown to approximately 80 professing members. With the encouragement of the Rev. Rui-ren Liu (劉瑞仁牧師), the moderator of the session, and the unanimous agreement of the congregation, the Rev. Nan-chieh Wang (王南傑牧師) was inducted as the first ordained minister of the church. Due to continued growth, TFPC made the decision to move to Weston Presbyterian Church in April 1983. However, the temporary nature of renting worship space soon prompted the congregation to seek a permanent location.
TFPC was fortunate to find a suitable property within the bounds of the Presbytery of East Toronto (PoET). In December 1988, the church purchased the property at 31 Eastwood Road. At the same time, investments were made to the property through major renovations and expansion over the next two years. Finally in 1990, the congregation moved into the building and has been worshipping there ever since.
In 1993, following motions made made by the presbytery, TFPC elected nine new elders on April 11, all of whom were installed on May 9. Under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Donald Wade, the interim moderator of the session, and the newly appointed elders, TFPC reached a new milestone. In September of the same year, the Rev. Bruce Musgrave (馬士桂牧師) was inducted as the minister of youth ministry, serving until June 1995.
On August 31, 1994, the Rev. Rong-min Chiang (江榮憫牧師) arrived in Toronto and was officially inducted on September 11 to serve the Taiwanese Ministry. In 2000, John Tors resigned as the youth director, and in 2001, Bob Hsieh took on this role. On February 26, 2002, Rev. Chiang resigned from his position and moved to Texas, USA. In April 2002, the Rev. Dr. Paul McLean (麥煜道牧師), appointed by PoET as the interim moderator, began guiding the church. On October 1, 2004, the Rev. David Pan (潘健信牧師) was inducted and served until his departure on April 30, 2009.
The Rev. Andy Kuo (郭毓安牧師) was inducted on November 20, 2011. Rev. Kuo continued his pastoral ministry of the church until his departure at the end of 2014. The Rev. Dr. Paul McLean and the Rev. Dr. Beth McCutcheon (麥可欣牧師) were appointed as co-interim moderators to guide the church in search of a new minister. During this time, the Rev. Moses Wu (伍烱豪牧師) provided spiritual care and pulpit supply for the Taiwanese Ministry from 2017-2019. The English Ministry were supplied by guest preachers as well as members who were theological trained.
In response to the challenges as well as opportunities brought about by COVID-19 in 2020, TFPC made efforts toward intergenerational worship, emphasizing on the church’s unique multilingual and multicultural identity. At the onset of the pandemic, the church began offering online bilingual (Taiwanese and English) devotionals. This multilingual format continued as worship services resumed both online and in person, and it remains an integral part of our worship today.
Given the complex nature of multicultural and multilingual immigrant churches, TFPC underwent a lengthy search for a suitable minister. On November 19, 2023, the Rev. Jay Liang (梁晧潔牧師), a second-generation Taiwanese-American who received theological education in Taiwan and Canada, was ordained and inducted as the minister of TFPC. Together with the session, they continue to shepherd this multicultural congregation founded on the love of God and in the name of Christ.
In Ephesians 2:19-22, the Apostle Paul writes, “So then, you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone; in him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God.” May we be united in Christ, with Him as the cornerstone of the church, building a church that reflects the unity found in the love of God.
