A History of Union Church Cemetery 1835-1981 inclusive
The cemetery of Union Presbyterian Church was the gift, by promise, of James Starret
in 1835 and gift, by deed, of James Fraser in 1853, said farm having come into his possession.
The burial ground was deeded at the same time as the church site.
Some of the first plots purchased were W.Philephs, John Chisholm,
Jas. Reed, John Evans and Jas. Fraser at $1.00 per plot.
The Managers and Elders of the church looked after the cemetery business
until March 1952 when a Cemetery Board was appointed consisting of:
Fraser Macdonald, Jack McDonald, Art McKane,
Geo.H. Leslie, Clarence Anderson, Wilfred Leslie and Laverne Thompson.
It was decided to send out a letter to all plot holders and descendants of same,
asking for financial support for the purpose of perpetual care.
Resulting from this letter, there was a generous response totalling $800.00.
A tractor and mower was purchased and members of the
congregation gave of their time and a general cleanup was made.
On April 26th, 1954, Clarence Anderson donated land to further enlarge cemetery grounds
One full plot was reserved for his use. This enlarged the grounds by 20 plots
with 8 individual gravesites in each.
In the 1970s Keith Leslie was paid $20.00 for mowing the grass for the season.
In 1967 Clarence Anderson was appointed Secretary-Treasurer
to replace Verne Thompson (deceased).
In January 1978, at the Annual Meeting, the following members were
appointed to the Cemetery Board:
Mssrs. Art McKane, Clarence Anderson, Wilfred Leslie, Fraser Macdonald,
Terry Leslie, Allan Cook, Dave Anderson and Leslie Young.
