Presbyterianism

“Presbyterian” comes from the Greek word “Presbuteros”
”Presbuteros” means “Elder”

The Victoria Chinese Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Canada.  Our Church is governed by Elders.  There are two types of Elders – the Teaching Elders who teaches and expounds on the Word of God; and the Ruling Elders who are responsible for the spiritual life of the congregation.  Both are ordained to their office and together they form the Session of our Church.

The Presbyterian Church in Canada is a confessional church.  Jesus Christ is the King and Head of the Church.  The Old and New Testaments are the Canons of all Doctrines by which Christ rules our faith and life.  Some teachings are put in condensed statements called creeds or confessions, such as the Apostles’ Creed and the Westminster Confession.  They are only the subordinate standard of our Church.  Our primary standard as a Church is the Holy Bible, the Word of God.  All others are secondary to or come under the Holy Scriptures.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried.  He descended into hell.  The third day He rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty.  From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.   Amen.
