St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church in Bass River NB

We are located at 9242 Route 490, at the corner of the Mclaughlin Road (490) and the Bass River Rd. Our life as Saint Mark’s Presbyterian Church, is woven into our life as part of Bass River; serving up and down the Richibucto River region.
Members of this congregation make it a point to be involved in community projects, and doing our utmost to make sure there are programs for seniors, events for our youth, activities for children and a place for everyone here in this region. It is more than filling the pews, though sometimes this work does connect with our life as a church.
So don’t be surprised when you meet our members on the board of the Bass River Fair Hall, or in the dish-pan at the United Church supper, or on the roof of another congregation’s building, or helping at the nursing home. We know that our place is in the midst of God’s people.
St. Mark’s  hosts seasonal fellowship potlucks at the Bass River Fair Hall and our annual Maundy Thursday Supper with our neighbours at St. Paul’s Anglican in Brown’s Yard, which welcomes members from all congregations and others in the community.

The cemetery is located near the site of an older church building on the Keswick Road. In the late 1800s that building was destroyed by fire and replaced with a much larger facility built in Gothic style to resemble St. Giles in Scotland. That building was destroyed by lightning 1984 after the church’s new minister delivered his first sermon to the congregation as its minister. The current structure stands on the sight of the previous building and though more humble, serves the congregation well as a house of worship.

Some details regarding the cemetery and its heritage were collected by Deborah Hale, and are available by clicking here.

St. Marks is working on its outreach to the summer cottagers, which is a growing area of outreach and pastoral care.

Over the last few years we have had to renovate the steeple of our church building  so we will no longer have water leaking into our main sanctuary.  A solid sealed roof now adorns the top of our tower, which is practical and effective. So some of the pictures you see of St. Marks show the various stages of this project. Hopefully this solves the issue.
Support for the building and such emergent repairs is always appreciated as we continue to apply this building to the work we are called to do and the service we are meant to offer here in Bass River.
