Minister: Rev. Dr. Emily Bisset

Emily has been the minister at Calvin Presbyterian for 10 years.  She is a graduate of Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA.  She received her Masters of Divinity (M.Div) degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and was ordained in the PC(USA) in March, 2000.  After serving at North Shenango Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania, she came to Toronto to pursue her Doctorate of Theology (Th.D.) in homiletics (preaching).  She served Knox (Oshawa) Presbyterian Church as their minister for 5 years before come to Calvin in 2012.  Emily teaches preaching at Knox College  (Toronto School of Theology, University of Toronto).  She leads workshops and preaches for national events in the Presbyterian Church in Canada, such as the Canada Youth Conference, as well as more local events, retreats and seminars.  She is married to the Rev. Thomas A. Burton
Conductor, Educator, Performer

Thomas received his musical education at the Schulich School of Music with a B.M. in Trombone Performance and his M.M. in Choral Conducting at the University of Michigan.

He has a broad musical background that includes both Artistic and Musical Director for various churches, choirs and theatrical groups in Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Michigan. He is also a tenor with experience in multiple professional ensembles. He currently sings with the Exultate Singers and will be working with the Tenor and Bass Choir at the University of Toronto beginning in 2021.

As well as his musical interests, Thomas is a member of the United Church and is passionate about its commitment to social justice. He served on the Racial Justice and Gender Justice Advisory Committee at the church’s national office for three years. Presently, he is a part of a United Church Intentional Community called Flourish House which aims to provide community services to young adults in midtown Toronto.

You can find him on Sunday mornings directing the choir, at the organ bench, or playing the 9′ concert grand piano housed in our sanctuary.
