Ministry

History:

Iona Presbyterian Church became a congregation on December 6, 1964. The name IONA was chosen to reflect the spirit of the Iona movement in Scotland, which is concerned with issues that face our world today. The celtic cross is a symbol of our heritage and its’ central place in the sanctuary and outside window, depicts Christ as the center of all we do.

Involvement in the Community:

We support the community of Dartmouth on an ongoing basis through such programs as the East Dartmouth Foodand Clothing Banks as well as F.O.O.D (Feed Others of Dartmouth). We participate in national and international assistance programs such as the Canadian Food Grains Bank and hold special appeals for disaster relief throughout the world.

Reaching Out to Youth and Young Adults:

Sunday School begins at 2 years of age with children learning about God through son, story and crafts. Our Youth Groups, for both Junior and Senior High ages, meet twice a month providing oppotunities for fun, learning, socializing and community outreach. Our youth also lead worship at different times during the year. Iona also sponsors Scouting and Guiding groups during the school months.

Learning Opportunities:

Adult Bible studies and discussion groups are held in daytime and evening hours. The studies vary in length, topic and depth – there is something for everyone! In the summer we have a one week Vacation Bible School for children.

Music and More!

Our choir provides anthems each Sunday as well as an annual Cantata and other musical events. On special occasions we are treated to our Men’s Choir or our Sunday School children presenting favourite songs. Our Sunday School children also lead worship through their Christmas pageant.

Time for Family and Friends:

Join us for coffee, tea or juice following the worship service each Sunday – that is until the summer months are upon us- then it is “Lemonade-on-the-Lawn”. Wednesday mornings from September to June you can join the “Coffee Break” group which meets in the kitchen for a time of fellowship, sewing, crafts and conversation… your children are welcome to come with you! Several congregational events take place throughout the year such as “Burn’s Night” where we toast the Bard with a Burn’s supper and entertainment. Our Mother’s Day Tea and the Christmas Tea and Sale are both great hits in the community. The Talent & Service Auction happens once a year as does our annual congregational retreat on the shores of the Northumberland Strait in Merigomish.

Note from the Minister:

People come to this growing and Christ-centred congregation from all walks of life. We come together to worship and praise God. We reflect upon the meaning of the scriptures for daily living and enjoy Christian fellowship. It is an opportunity to discover ways in which we can express our faith and our commitment to Christ through service to others. You are warmly welcome to come an join us.
