The Mariners’ Service
The Mariners’ Service has been a commemorative event at Knox for over 100 years. Since the Great Storm on November 9, 1913, an annual Memorial Service has been held. It has evolved into the present form where tribute is paid to the 254 sailors who lost their lives in the Great Storm, but also prayers are offered for the safe return of ‘those who go down to the sea in ships.’ On the last Sunday of February, the church is decorated with flags, buoys, lights and other insignia of the merchant ships. The Harbouraires Men’s Choir has been a vital part of the Mariners’ Service for many years.
Kirkin’ O’ the Tartan
Following the success of the first service in May 1994, this traditional Scottish service became an annual event. Banner standards and stands were made, and members of the congregation donated genuine tartan fabrics. The evolution of the tartans in Scotland parallels the history of the Scottish Church. During the service the tartans are blessed, as those of Scottish ancestry seek to retain and promote their rich heritage. Usually held on the last Sunday of the month of May.
