“But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, ‘Get behind me, Satan!  For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human thins.’” ~Mark 8:33

 What had just happened?

  • Peter confessed that Jesus is the Messiah.
  • Jesus taught the implications of that identity: he must undergo great sufferings, be condemned by those in authority, be killed, and rise again after three days.
  • Peter rebuked Jesus.
  • Jesus physically turned placing Peter behind him while rebuking:  “Get behind me, Satan!  For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.”

Peter didn’t deny that Jesus is a messiah.  He didn’t deny that Jesus is a way to salvation.  Maybe even the Messiah and the way to salvation.  But he struggled to accept Jesus’ messiahship on Jesus’ terms.  He wanted the Messiah to conform to his ideas.

However, a saviour who conforms to our ideals is no saviour at all, it is just an extension of ourself.

What do I want from the Messiah?

What do I want the Messiah to be?  to do?

Can I accept Jesus on his terms?

Can I accept his agenda? his ways? his means?

Can I accept the cross along with the cradle? the passion along with the miracles?

Can I accept the cost along with the glory yet to be revealed?

Can I trust him to strengthen me as I follow him on his way?
