Rev. Leo Hughes Granted Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada and Queen Elizabeth II’s representative, has granted Rev. Leo Hughes the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers . The 87-year-old Hughes is a well-known volunteer with the service organization (he co-founded the town branch), along with the local Legion (he helps veterans and participates in campaigns), and especially his many years as St. Andrew’s Presbyterian reverend (he speaks and prays at the cenotaph every Remembrance Day).

Debra Hooper commented…”His acceptance speech was the highlight. He ‘shared’ his awards with Margaret and all his children, saying that it was as much their reward as his, because of their support of him on the many occasions when he wasn’t home because of the many meetings and obligations. ”
