What’s a Presbyterian?

We’re Christians. Followers of Jesus Christ.

The term ‘Presbyterian’ comes from the Greek word presbyteros, which means “elder.” Each congregation elects ruling elders who govern the church, and each church is supported and overseen by a regional collection of churches, called a Presbytery. St Andrew’s belongs to the Presbytery of Edmonton-Lakeland that extends from Lloydminster to Fort McMurray.

While Presbyterians agree on some fundamentals about faith, God and Jesus Christ, we tend to have a wide range of opinions on social issues and the finer points of theology. Some of us are conservative and some of us are very progressive; some of us are charismatic and some of us are very traditional. We view this broad range of differences as one of our strengths.
