The Session of First Presbyterian Church
Every Presbyterian congregation has a Session comprised of the minister as moderator and all of the ruling elders in the congregation. The session meets, usually monthly, to provide leadership for the congregation and oversight of the pastoral care.
Session’s main responsibilities include:
- appointing and providing for the administration of Baptism and the observance of the Lord’s Supper, regulates the hours and the forms of public worship, receipt of offerings, and church music.
- admitting people to church membership, maintains a list of members and adherents residing in her/his area and makes a special effort to get to know them through “visiting, counselling, and encouraging them in the Christian life” (Book of Forms 109.4).
- supervising the work of Christian education in the congregation.
- Keeping the congregation informed, not only of the local work of the congregation, but also of the wider Church’s ministry in Canada and around the world.
- Supporting and encouraging good stewardship, not only of the congregation’s finances, but also the use of church facilities in supporting the mission of God in the larger community.
- providing assistance for the poor and needy,
- Supervising all groups and organizations in the Church are under. Formation of any group or organization to operate under congregational auspices requires session approval.
