History of our Church

The Knox Church history begins in 1838 when early Scottish settlers in the region
worshiped in a primitive log Church on the Sixth Concession of Roxborough Township, along which settlement took place. In the mid 1840’s, the Congregation went into the Free knox3Church and in 1854 the log church was replaced by a frame Church in which services were held in English and Gaelic. In 1885, a new Church building was erected, and worship continued to be held there for some time afterward. When the railway was built and the village of Moose Creek grew up and along with it a new Church building was erected in 1900. The congregation lost about one third of its families to the United Church in 1925. In 1950, Knox Church became a student charge and was primarily served by students of the Presbyterian College for approximately thirty-nine years. In 1989, the Congregation became part of the Maxville-St. Elmo-Moose Creek pastoral charge. Knox Church makes 43% of the Minister’s support for the pastoral charge.knox1

Just over one year later, in November 1990 the beloved old brick Church building was destroyed by fire and the congregation resolved immediately to rebuild. With substantial help from congregations in the Presbytery and others, the congregation’s fifth building was dedicated on Easter Sunday, 1992. This has brought new life to the congregation and it is attracting young families. The manse was sold to help pay for the new building. The new brick building is situated on a beautiful location with a creek in the rear.
